Shanti holds an LLB (Honours) (National University of Singapore), a Diploma in International Arbitration and is a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators (FCIArb). She has been called to both the Singapore (1995) and Malaysian Bar (1999). She runs her own legal practice in Kuala Lumpur focused on corporate law, healthcare law, private wealth management and appropriate dispute resolution. Shanti is passionate about all aspects of mediation. She is an Associate Mediator with the Singapore Mediation Centre. She is also a Mediator with the Malaysian Mediation Centre, a Mediator empanelled by the Malaysian Securities Industry Dispute Resolution Centre (SIDREC) and on the panel of mediators at the Kuala Lumpur Regional Centre for Arbitration (KLRCA). Driven by her passion for better problem solving, she has also completed the Program on Negotiation (Negotiation and Mediation) at Harvard Negotiation Institute (Harvard Law School - Spring 2014) and has been a trainer with Singapore Mediation Centre for its certificate programme for mediators since 2013. Shanti has been mediating at the Small Claims Tribunal of the State Courts of Singapore since 2012 as well as mediating cases under SIDREC since 2015. She has also mediated as a Healthcare Mediator under the Healthcare Mediation Scheme. Shanti has also been appointed as ad hoc mediator in construction, matrimonial, healthcare, eldercare and shareholder dispute matters. As a lawyer, Shanti has acted as a mediation advocate in numerous matters involving medico-legal issues. She also has acted as a mediation advocate in commercial matters (banking disputes) and corporate matters involving shareholder disputes. Shanti derives significant satisfaction as a trainer in negotiation and mediation skills for Singapore Mediation Centre and Malaysia Mediation Centre. In addition to regular trainings of mediators in Singapore and Malaysia, she conducted mediation training for the Brunei judiciary for the Singapore Mediation Centre and has trained the team at the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO) in mediation skills for the Malaysian Mediation Centre.
Other Qualifications and Experience
Mediation Industry contribution: In 2013, she assisted the KLRCA in the updating of the Mediation Rules of the KLRCA and has contributed to the Asian Journal of Mediation. She is currently involved in advising institutions and corporations on the value of mediation and to setting up systems for effective mediation, negotiation and communication processes. She teaches Healthcare Regulations at Taylor’s University (Law School) and the legal aspects of medical practice to Doctors taking a Masters in Aesthetic Medicine at UCSI University and the role of mediation in healthcare risk management. She also writes and speaks on negotiation skills, mediation and mediation advocacy. Shanti is happily married to a fellow lawyer and mediator and they have a pair of twin daughters aged 7 who give her plenty of opportunities to practice mediation.
