Alvin is passionate about mediation and peace-making. He is an accredited mediator at the Singapore Mediation Centre (SMC) and he sits on their panel of assessors for mediator accreditation in Singapore. He is also an accredited mediator with Regent’s University, School of Psychotherapy and Counselling Psychology, London. Alvin mediates at SMC and at the Centre for Dispute Resolution in the State Courts of Singapore. He is also a mediator under the Private Education Dispute Resolution Scheme, the Healthcare Mediation Scheme, as well as the Legal Profession (Inadequate Professional Services Complaint Inquiry) Scheme. As a lawyer, Alvin also acts as a mediation advocate in matters and disputes involving construction, commercial, corporate, employment, family and matrimonial, insurance and personal injuries, and intellectual property. He is also a member of SMC’s panel of Collaborative Family Practitioners. Alvin has received advanced negotiations and mediation training from the Strauss Institute for Dispute Resolution, Pepperdine University School of Law. He has also received training on conflict coaching by Conflict Coaching International. He is a trainer in negotiation and mediation skills for SMC and the Singapore Institute of Legal Education. He has trained professionals from education, medical, legal, and public sectors, and he has also conducted mediation training for grassroots and community leaders, foreign dignitaries, as well as the Thai judiciary in Thailand. In 2011, Alvin participated in the Inter-Cultural Pilot Program to develop criteria for inter-cultural mediator training and IMI Certification – a program conducted by the International Mediation Institute (IMI) Inter-Cultural Task Force.
Other Qualifications and Experience
Alvin holds an LL.B. (Hons) and LL.M (Corporate and Commercial Law) from the University of London. He has been called to the Bar in England and Wales (the Honourable Society of Lincoln’s Inn), and to the Singapore Bar. He is a Teaching Fellow of the Singapore Institute of Legal Education, where he is a tutor and trainer in advocacy, drafting and mediation skills for law graduates sitting for the Singapore Bar exams. Alvin is the Honorary Secretary for the Society of Mediation Professionals (Singapore), and a member of the Board of Governors for Spirit of Enterprise (an Institution of Public Character). Alvin is happily married with two children, aged 15 and 11.
