foray into mediation began in August 2007 when he successfully completed a Community Mediation course. He subsequently attended a Mediation Workshop for Inter-Religious Confidence Circle (IRCC) in January 2008.
Salim subsequently completed the Joint Singapore Mediation Centre (SMC) and Primary Dispute Resolution Centre Associate Mediator Programme and was among the pioneer batch of lawyers to be accredited as an Associate Mediator of the Subordinate Courts of Singapore (as it was known then) and SMC in May 2010. In August 2011, he joined SMC’s training arm and has since trained lawyers, doctors, engineers, post-graduate law students, grassroots leaders, mediators from Community Mediation Centres and other professionals. He also regularly assesses professionals and law graduates in their Mediation Skills Assessment and Associate Mediator Accreditation Assessment.
In February 2012, he was part of SMC’s team of trainers which travelled to Colombo, Sri Lanka on the invitation of the Ministry of Justice to train their mediator trainers. In June 2012, Salim successfully completed the Mediating Disputes Summer Program at the prestigious Harvard Law School.
In August 2013, Salim was conferred an appreciation award for his involvement as a member of SMC’s Adjunct Faculty for successfully clocking up 200 hours of service to SMC.
In June 2014, Salim received accreditation from Regent’s University, London, School of Psychotherapy and Psychology as a mediator after completing a course in Mediation Skills for ADR in Singapore.
Salim has invaluable experience as a mediator, trainer, assessor and counsel. He mediates at the Primary Dispute Resolution Centre of the Subordinate Courts of Singapore, SMC and privately. He has mediated in commercial and contractual matters arising from disputes in construction, renovation, sale of goods, employment, real estate and personal injury claims.
As counsel, he has handled disputes in insurance law, criminal law, commercial and contractual matters. He has, to date, mediated 25 cases at the State Courts, SMC as well as privately.
Other Qualifications & Experience
Salim has more than 22 years of experience in civil and criminal litigation. His main areas of practice are insurance law, criminal law, general civil litigation matters and alternative dispute resolution. He is one of the 4 founding members and directors of United Legal Alliance LLC.
An active volunteer for more than two decades, Salim has served in various positions in legal, political, sports, social, youth, religious and cultural organisations.
Besides serving in a few committees in The Law Society of Singapore, Salim has also served as a volunteer lawyer under The Law Society’s Criminal Legal Aid scheme for close to 2 decades. Also, in 2008, he was appointed to the Legal Aid panel of solicitors.
Salim also served as the Chairman of the Legal Committee at The Muslim Converts’ Association of Singapore for about 8 years and has been dispensing free legal advice at the Association’s legal clinic since 1994.
Salim served as the Legal Advisor of Tampines Rovers FC. During that time, he also took up appointments as Honorary Secretary and Team Manager. Salim now serves as Chairman of the Player Status Committee of the Football Association of Singapore. From 2011 to 2013, he served as a member of the Appeals Board of FAS.
Salim has provided pro-bono legal service to the Singapore Disability Sports Council. He has also rendered honorary legal advice to the Singapore National Olympic Council (SNOC). He has served as a member in SNOC’s National Anti-Doping in Sports Commission which was later reconstituted as Anti-Doping Singapore (ADS). In January 2010, Salim was appointed as a Board member of ADS by the Minister for Community Development and got his term renewed again in January 2012. Also in July 2012, when ADS was reconstituted as the National Anti-Doping Advisory Board to the Singapore Sports Council, Salim was appointed as Board member for a term of 2 years. In the SEA Games 2015, Salim served as a member of the Anti-Doping Results Management Committee. He served the same role in the ASEAN Para Games and chaired the Result Management Committee Hearing Panel for an athlete who was tested positive during the Games.
In 2012, Salim received a Long Service Award in appreciation for dedicated voluntary service to the Community for 10 years. Salim currently serves as Vice-Chairperson of Eunos Inter-Racial Confidence Circle, Community Engagement Programme and has served as the Assistant Branch Secretary of PAP Eunos Branch. He served the residents of Aljunied GRC, Eunos Division at Meet-the-People Sessions at the Eunos Branch. For his service to the community, he has been conferred the Public Service Medal/ Pingat Bakti Masyarakat in the National Day Awards 2013.
